Surroundings Callantsoog / Groote Keeten

Callantsoog has the narrowest dune row and also the highest dune in the Netherlands. From the village, you are almost right on the beach or at one of the six pavilions. In 2002 and prior years, Callantsoog received the "Blue Flag" designation from the European Union for having a clean and safe beach.

'Het Zwanenwater' Nature Reserve

In the dunes, just south of Callantsoog, lies the "Het Zwanenwater" nature reserve. It has an area of 580 ha. A beautiful dune area with two large dune lakes, marshes, ponds, moors and woods. From March to August one of the largest spoonbill colonies of Europe stay here. Moreover, there are many rare plants here like wild orchids, along with flowers and herbs. Furthermore, this is a breeding ground for more than 70 bird species. The nature reserve, with its varied landscape and exceptional flora and fauna, is only partially accessible (for a fee). Members of the Society for the Preservation of Natural Monuments in the Netherlands have free admission. In the spring there are vast flower fields in the hinterland. Alkmaar is famous for its cheese market, Den Helder for its naval port or the unique IJsselmeer ports such as Medembblik, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Volendam and Marken. In the hinterland of the Kop van Noord-Holland there are small villages and towns waiting to be discovered by you. Numerous roads and paths through the alternating area offer the cyclist a multitude of possibilities.
