For many, the region of Vysocina (the Highlands) is still an undiscovered place, and yet it has a lot to offer. Besides the beautiful landscape - ideal for walking, cycling, exploration or just simple relaxation - it is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding towns and cities.
In the vicinity there are many historic sites and tourist destinations such as the Gothic Kámen castle which dates from the early 14th century. After extensive reconstruction and renovation work, this castle is now also home to a motorcycle museum. Kamenice nad Lipou is dominated by a Renaissance castle dating from the 15th century. In the castle’s park you’ll find a monumental garden with a lime tree, whose age is estimated at over 700 years.
Another great attraction is the narrow gauge railway that runs in the direction of Obrataň, or on the other side via Jindřichův Hradec to Nova Bystrice. You can also take a ride aboard an old historic steam locomotive powered train. And don’t forget the very special castle of Cervena Lhota which occupies a stunning position on a rocky island, surrounded by water, with only one input via a bridge. This castle is one of the treasures of the Czech Republic. Originally a Gothic water tower stood here. During the 16th century it was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau. In the 17th century, Baroque modifications were performed. Due to its unique location, the castle has been used numerous times by filmmakers. The ruins of the castle of Orlik, including a stone tower, port, and part of a palace, have been preserved, and the extensive ruins of the castle of Choustník are also worth exploring.
In the period from April to October you can visit Chýnov cave, one of the largest and most important in southern Bohemia.
Another very popular tourist attraction is the town of Pelhřimov. This is known as the city of records and curiosities. Here you can visit the Museum of Records and Curiosities, an exhibition on Czech handcrafts, the watchtower of Bartholomew church which dates from 1576, a ghost museum and the museum of Vysocina. In addition, the city also has a beautiful center with many shops, restaurants, supermarkets and even a pool. In short, this region has plenty to offer.
