Winter sports; In the mountains; Among nature
Sauerland is also known as “the country of a thousand mountains” due to its high peaks, deep valleys, little rivers, twisting roads, rolling pastures, extended woods and cheerful characteristic villages. Without a doubt, Sauerland has one of the most varied landscapes in Germany. Walking is possible at any degree of difficulty and any state of physical condition thanks to an extensive net of walking routes consisting of hundreds of kilometers, leading through a constantly changing landscape with magnificent views. The town of Winterberg with app. 4500 inhabitants is especially famous for its extraordinary winter sports facilities, very close to the border with the Netherlands. There is much to experience throughout the whole year: mountain biking, abseiling, gliding, golf and mini-golf. This area is rich in cultural, architectural and historical monuments. Various parks and nature resorts are waiting to be discovered. There are numerous holiday facilities for children, such as the Peter Pan amusement park “Nimmerland” (Neverland), the “Mäuseweg” (Mouse Path) with all sorts of wonderful surprises in the forest and the observation tower on Kahler Asten Mountain. For older kids there is a climbing track, summer luge run and bungee jumping. In bad weather, visit one of the indoor swimming pools in the neighbourhood complete with waterslides and various holiday fun equipment.
